EPS Recycling Equipment

The most common method of recycling expanded polystyrene packaging is through a regrind process. Due to supply and ease of processing, packaging manufacturers normally incorporate recycled content into their products by blending in used expanded particles from products they take in and grind down to the bead level.

AFPR equipment supplier member companies offer a range of EPS recycling equipment. Please see below for overviews and contact information.

Bright Technologies, specialty equipment div. of Sebright Products, Inc. has developed a line of EPS Densifiers for volumes from 100 lbs. per hour to 1200 lbs. per hour, producing truckloads of 40,000 lbs. for optimum efficiency. Our equipment is designed, manufactured, installed, and serviced factory direct right here in the United States. The original EPS Densifier, placed in 1995, is still in use today.

Complete design services specific to your site when needed and ancillary systems from pre-breakers to bag houses with full integration with your existing systems are all available.

No heat is used to reduce pentane gas dangers, just 190,000 lbs. of pressure applied until all air has been removed and there is no remaining memory. This creates a solid block of PS with densities of 17 to 22 lbs. per cubic foot and it doesn’t matter whether you start with EPS dust or small chunks of EPS.

To increase recycling of EPS in the United States, there are numerous programs utilized to place equipment wherever volume permits and the foam can be sold to manufacturers using the densified EPS Foam in products like composite or plastic lumber used for longer lasting, weather resistant outdoor decks or fencing, drain field aggregate substitute or drainage tile blankets used for increased drainage under roads and highways, and it is even used for hard jewel cases for CDs and DVDs.

This extremely resilient building and packing material does not need to end up in your local landfill after its original use. Bright Technologies EPS Densification equipment is the most reliable long term investment in EPS recycling you can make.

For a quick view of the equipment in use, see www.densifiervideo.com and link to our website for contact info!

Erlenbach Recycling Plants start with a pre-crusher that will break down EPS or EPP to approximately 30 x 30 mm, which can then be introduced manually or by conveyor belt system. The recycled material is fed by a blower to a de-dusting cyclone plant that separates the fine dust particles (typically less than 1%) from the recyclable material. The clean recycled material is then fed by a blower to silo bags for storage. The equipment is available in different sizes and a noise dampening system is also offered. Erlenbach presses typically see an average of 20% recycled material introduced into packaging. Block molds are capable of 100% recycled material.

The new STYROCYCLER™ is the first densifier of its class to be offered in 110v single phase household current.  It is ideal for electronic, appliance, home goods, furniture, and any retail/wholesale application that has EPS "Styrofoam" waste taking up valuable dumpster volume space.

One of the Fine Grind Units

Foam Equipment & Consulting offer the modular HERGER line of grinding and compacting equipment which can be mixed or matched to build custom systems. See below for details.

Coarse/Fine Grinding System and dedusting systems grind the EPS to a particular size and usable quality. It can be used for shape, block and bean bag manufacturers.
Large Compactor produces 400+ pounds/hour of compacted EPS in log form. Made for recycling centers and large volume needs, it allows for economical shipping to processing plants.
Small Compactor is the same as large but produces only 100 pounds/hour of compacted EPS in log form. Reduces volume of waste if sent to landfill.
Coarse Grinding System breaks EPS into small pieces roughly 2-3, which can then be bagged for efficient shipping or storage. Best for small waste generator looking to reduce volume.

The JUMBO recycling system by KBM

KBM manufactures recycling systems that enable the EPS and EPP industry reuse as much as possible in their production. KBM offers a wide range of recycling systems that can manage 140 1400 cubic feet per hour of recycled EPS. They also offer a unique granulation process which brings the material down to the individual bead with a minimum of dust. This optimizes the reuse of EPS products and with STYROMIX/STYROMETER it is possible to accurately control the mixing/metering to reuse even more.

For non-EPS-manufacturing locations KBM offers the Styropactor compactors. KBM Styropactor will accept wet or dry material and can also be used as a crusher. Because it is non-corrosive it can be used in extreme environments and can take contaminated material such as EPS seafood packaging. Since it is filled vertically, Styropactor can accept pieces of any length. And, because they are mobile they can be used in any fish processing industry, supermarket, department store, etc. The volume is highly reduced resulting in minimized handling and transportation costs. Available in two sizes, Styropactor Mini has a capacity of approximately 77- 100 pounds per hour and the Styropactor Maxi has a capacity of 70-90 kg per hour.

The RUNI screw compactor densifies EPS at a ratio of 50:1 reaching a density of 18 lbs per ft3. The square blocks of the SK370 can be stacked in a 40´container reaching maximum capacity of 44000 lbs per container.

The RUNI screw compactors start at the SK120 with a capacity of 35 lbs/hour for the retailer, SK240 with capacity of 150 lbs/hr, and the largest compactor being SK370 with a capacity of 400 lbs per hour.

A silo system with up to 3 compactors and a separate pre-crusher enable a capacity of 2000 lbs per hour using the silo as a buffer. Pre-crushers can be placed at various locations in the facility as the EPS is blown to the silo.

The RUNI screw compactors are suitable for the entire range of EPS from clean virgin EPS to fish boxes containing moisture and even EPS that has soaked in water. The possibility to use the heavy-duty pre-crusher directly on the machine as well as on the side makes it possible to crush thick and dense EPS and EPP.

Since 1997 RUNI has sold 225 of the SK370 and 80 of the SK240 for EPS alone. The SK120 was launched in 2005 for EPS and RUNI has sold more than 120 units worldwide.

The RUNIs can also compact a wide range of materials and drain liquid in the process.

The RUNI saves time and space without using a large amount of energy.

Contact one of our distributors or RUNI if in need of further information.
